How To Find The Best Organic Dog Food
It seems these days we are flooded with commercials and packaging telling us how great so-and-so’s dog food is. But how do we really figure out which is the best organic dog food? The good news is we are finally seeing more companies showing some concern over what we are feeding our dogs. But you are going to really have to look at the dog food to figure out which one is the best for you.
First, let’s go over some definitions:
- ‘Organic’ means the food uses 100% USDA-certified organic ingredients
- ‘Made with organic ingredients’ means the food must use at least 70% USDA-certified organic ingredients
- ‘Natural’ or ‘All Natural’ means it is coming from nature – no chemical flavoring, coloring, or preservatives – but does not really say anything about the nutritional value of any of the ingredients
So we go in the store or online and find ‘organic’ dog food. Now most organic dog food companies have gone organic because they really do care about the health of your dog. But, as always, Buyer Beware. There are also unscrupulous companies out there that just want to make a quick buck. By that I mean you can provide organic ingredients, but that doesn’t guarantee they are of any nutritional value to your dog. Organic only applies to how it was grown.
Some of the more well-known organic dog foods include:
So to find the best organic dog food you must look at 2 things:

- Find 2 logos on the dog food container: the USDA-organic logo AND a 3rd party certification verifying the food is organic. Without both logos, chances are the product is not organic because not all dog food manufacturers abide by the USDA regulations.
- Look at the dog food ingredients label. The best organic dog food will not have animal by-products. It will not have too much grain and grain by-products. A nutritious, organic dog food will have similar type ingredients to a super-premium dog food – the only difference is whether the ingredients are organic or not.
