What Is The Healthiest Dog Food For Allergies?
What is the healthiest dog food for allergies? There is no ONE dog food that will work for all dogs. The first step is in deciding what dog food ingredient your dog is actually allergic to.
If you don’t know what your dog is allergic to but are pretty certain it is a food allergy, then you have 2 choices:
- Start the Elimination diet (see page on Elimination Diet) to figure out just what ingredient(s) your dog cannot tolerate.
- Switch to a different dog food which has completely different ingredients. Look at the dog food ingredients label to determine the main ingredients and then find a dog food that uses a completely different protein source, carb source, etc. I’d suggest going to a premium dog food (organic, human-grade would be best) that has minimal ingredients. It will take a week or two to see any difference.
If you are not sure if your dog has an actual food allergy, but is definitely showing some allergy symptoms, a switch to a healthier dog food may be all they need. If you are currently feeding an average commercial dog food, there are good chances that your dog is just not getting the proper nutrition (I know, the packaging says it is balanced, blah, blah, blah – but the fact is, not very many dog foods in the market are really giving your dog the nutrition he really needs to thrive.)
