I decided to do an organic dog food comparison. There is a lot of controversy over what is considered an organic dog food. Although the organic definitions and guidelines are stricter than other labeling on dog foods, there is still room for confusion. Therefore, as always, Buyer Beware – look at the ingredients in your dog food before buying to be sure of what you are getting.
There are so many ‘categories’ of dog food out there. Premium dog food, super-premium, organic, holistic, all natural, …. So what should you feed your dog? Is a premium dog food good enough?
With the massive pet food recalls in the past few years, pet owners have been taking a closer look at their dog food. And a lot of people have been turning to a healthy, homemade or raw dog food over commercial dog food. Why? Because then you know exactly what is in your dog’s food. It’s food you get from your grocery store or butcher. But is feeding raw dog food to your dog dangerous?
It’s hard to go down the pet aisle in the stores without seeing several brands of natural and all natural dog food. But are these terms hype or hope? It certainly seems like these days, our pets have more medical problems than ever before – from allergies to food intolerance to arthritis. I just don’t remember any of my dogs as I was growing up having any of these problems. Perhaps they did and we just didn’t notice, but dogs weren’t immediate members of the family like they are now – they were pets, that’s it, just pets.
When I first heard about holistic dog food, I really didn’t understand. Holistic, to me, means taking the whole being into account, not just the individual parts. It is also generally associated with having the body heal itself. So how can you have a holistic dog food? Well, I still don’t really think you can, but I do understand why it is called that now – after looking at the dog food ingredients.
It seems these days we are flooded with commercials and packaging telling us how great so-and-so’s dog food is. But how do we really figure out which is the best organic dog food? The good news is we are finally seeing more companies showing some concern over what we are feeding our dogs. But you are going to really have to look at the dog food to figure out which one is the best for you.
What is the difference between super-premium and premium dog foods? In a nutshell, the quality of the ingredients, and to a lesser degree, how they are processed (which will be discussed in a another post).
When we think of Premium Dog foods, we typically think of two things: expensive and good for our dog. So it is natural to think that if a dog food is expensive, then it must be exceptionally good for our dog. But just because a dog food costs more doesn’t mean it is any good for your dog. A premium dog food should be nutritionally superior to other dog foods, irregardless of the price.
