Can Cheap Dog Food Be Healthy?
I was recently asked if a cheap dog food can be healthy. The answer for the most part is ‘no’. Dog food is made cheaply by using lots of low quality and by-product ingredients.

My friends know all about my healthy obsession with healthy dog food and ask me what are the best dog foods. Should they be all natural dog foods, or maybe holistic? There is a lot of confusion just in the naming of foods alone. I have a fairly good grasp on it and it still makes my head spin!
In 2007 healthy dogs and cats started dying. No one really knows how many pet needlessly died, but finally, there was a dog food recall. The killer was an non-food ingredient called melamine, that was used to cheaply boost protein in the dog food. This was definitely the largest recall affecting a large number of dog food labels, but there have been other dog food recalls before this one (possible problems caused from BHA preservative in 2003 and aflatoxin contamination in 2005). And there have been other dog food recalls since (salmonella from contaminated peanut butter in 2009).
In the store the other day I saw a bag of human grade dog food. Curious, and always on the lookout for good, nutritious food for my dogs, I went over and took a look. After researching dog foods for over a year now, I get very nervous and distrusting when I see something that is trying really hard to get my attention.
There is much debate over what is considered a healthy dog food. To provide the healthiest dog food for your dog, you will probably have to spend a LOT of money – pretty much like feeding a child.
The dog food your best friend uses might be good for their dog, but may not be the healthiest dog food for YOUR dog. And although your dog would probably love nothing more than a big juicy steak, you need to take several things into consideration in order to pick out the healthiest food for your dog and your situation. Different dogs have different nutritional needs at different stages in their lives.
